The veteran jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, born in 1920 in Concord, California, offers a tenderly nostalgic new CD, Indian Summer, which soothes and comforts us. The idyllic and picturesque solo melodies, played with Brubeck’s characteristic blocky-sounding chords tempered by gentle sweetness, include “Georgia on My Mind,” “Sweet Lorraine,” and “Memories of You.” Brubeck explains the pun of the title song, which he recorded a half-century ago: “Now, at this stage of my life, it seems to be a more appropriate time [to record it as] a sort of Indian summary.” As an accrual of peaceful good feelings, Indian Summer will delight and becalm every listener.
